Lecture topic: “The Role of Field Experiments in Social Sciences and Humanities: Insights from a Study on Prosocial Behavior”
The lecture will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 11:15, in Room 108, Jonavos st. 66, Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas.
Jakub Cigán is a researcher at the Laboratory for Experimental Research of Religion (LEVYNA) and assistant professor at the Department for the Study of Religions, Masaryk University (Czech Republic). In his research, he focuses on the research of an affiliation process (e.g., conversion) to religious groups and its social and psychological dynamics. His concern is the social function of individual autobiographical memory and recall in the affiliation process connected to the autobiographical narrative, costly signalling, and group hierarchy. He also participated in various research projects on meditation and disruptions of body representations, adverse aspects of meditation practices and evolutionary phylogenetic modelling of religions. He has participated in numerous fieldwork and experimental research projects at home and abroad.
About the lecture:
The Role of Field Experiments in Social Sciences and Humanities: Insights from a Study on Prosocial Behavior
In recent years, experiments have become an essential methodology in the social sciences and humanities. This resurgence is driven by advancements in tools, technologies, and statistical methods that improve data collection and analysis. For scholars of religion and anthropologists, field experiments are particularly valuable because they allow researchers to isolate causal relationships while maintaining high ecological validity.
This lecture will explore the benefits and challenges of conducting field experiments, using a specific study on the relationship between location and prosocial behavior as a case example. Conducted in Mauritius, this study examined whether participants’ behaviors varied in religious versus non-religious settings during a donation task.
The lecture will highlight the advantages of field experiments, such as the ability to isolate causal models and ensure ecological validity. It will also address both general and specific limitations encountered in field experiments.
